中国科学院物理研究所前身是成立于1928年的中央研究院物理研究所和成立于1929年的北平研究院物理研究所。研究方向以凝聚态物理为主，包括凝聚态物理、光物理、原子分子物理、等离子体物理、软物质物理、凝聚态理论和计算物理等。拥有磁学、超导、表面物理等。全所共有在职职工422人，1998年以来，物理所共获授权专利170项。
