动物对植物的取食，即植食过程，是自然界最为常见的生物间相互作用之一。这一过程对植物的生长、繁殖、生存以及生物多样性维持有着深远影响。然而，自然界中的植食程度在不同物种之间差异巨大，如何解释这种差异，已成为当前群落生态学领域数十年来关注的基本科学问题之一。
干旱区覆盖了全球40%以上土地面积，具有巨大的储碳潜力，但其土壤有机碳含量较低。一般认为，干旱条件抑制植物生长，降低其在土壤中的碳源输入。然而，土壤有机碳储量取决于有机碳源输入与分解之间的平衡。土壤有机碳的组成控制其微生物分解过程，其中，溶解性有机质（DOM）是土壤中最活跃的碳组分。因此，认识溶解性有机质组成和可降解性特征及其微生物驱动机制，将有助于深入理解干旱区土壤储碳机制。
