这个概念对应与和区别于“伴侣间的性交”（partnered sex）。偶暂，说的是双方的性交关系持续的时间很短，甚至只有一次性交，而且往往以后不再发生性交，也不建立长期的性关系。有人把这叫做“萍水相逢式的性交”，还有人称为“随意性交”。但是“随意性交”这个词另有别的意思。偶暂强调的是偶然、短暂和临时，并不包括随意的意思，而且有些偶暂式性交也是专一的，只不过由于种种原因而无法持续下去。
