夜间灯光的强度往往与一个地区的经济繁荣程度和社会发展水平有关。然而,近些年大量研究表明夜间灯光可能对生态环境带来较严重影响。这种生态影响与夜间灯光种类密切相关,其中白色LED光源对生物和环境的影响最为严重,其他光源如黄色LED和高压钠灯等对环境的影响次之;目前尚未发现红色LED对自然环境有明显不利影响,而且对植物具有一定的补光能力。为了更好地管理夜间灯光,对夜间灯光进行分类和空间制图是有必要的。
