天南星科植物的典型特征是有佛焰苞和肉穗花序。肉穗花序与佛焰苞完全分离的较多如白鹤芋属、花烛属、魔芋属、喜林芋属等；部分贴生于佛焰苞上的如泉七属、半夏属、落檐属、大薸属等，但肉穗花序与佛焰苞一侧完全合生的极为少见，青荚芋（Spathicarpa hastifolia）是其中之一。
